What is blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at improving the aesthetic and functional appearance of the eyelids. Over time, the skin loses its elasticity, and there is often an accumulation of fat or excess tissue in the upper and/or lower eyelid area. This can result in:

• Drooping of the upper eyelids,
• The appearance of “bags” under the eyes,
• A tired and aged look,
• In some cases, reduced visual field.

Blepharoplasty removes the excess skin and fat, restoring a youthful and refreshed look to the eyes, without altering the natural facial features.

Surgical Procedure

The surgery is performed under local anesthesia or sedation and lasts 1–2 hours, depending on whether it involves only the upper eyelids, only the lower eyelids, or both. Incisions are placed in the natural creases of the upper eyelid and just below the eyelashes of the lower eyelid, making them nearly invisible after healing.

In upper blepharoplasty, excess skin and fat are removed. In lower blepharoplasty, the surgeon removes or repositions fat and reinforces the support of the lower eyelid. In younger patients, a transconjunctival technique is often used, with an incision inside the eyelid, leaving no external marks.

Recovery is fast: the patient returns to daily activities within a few days, with mild swelling and bruising that subside within 7–10 days.
