What is a breast lift (mastopexy)?
A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting breast sagging and restoring firmness, shape, and position. Over time, due to aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, or hereditary factors, the breast tends to lose its elasticity and support, resulting in drooping. Mastopexy restores the breast to a more youthful, firm, and lifted appearance without necessarily changing its volume.
In some cases, the procedure may be combined with breast augmentation (implant placement) or reduction, depending on the patient’s needs. The surgery is not only aesthetic in terms of body image but also functional, as many women experience relief from back pain or skin irritations associated with breast sagging.

Procedure details
ΗThe surgery is performed under general anesthesia and lasts about 2–3 hours. The plastic surgeon selects the appropriate technique based on the degree of sagging and the anatomy of the area. The most common techniques are:
- Periareolar incision (only around the nipple)
- Vertical incision (around the nipple and vertically to the inframammary fold)
- Inverted-T or anchor (around the nipple, vertically, and horizontally along the fold)
The surgeon removes excess skin, reshapes the glandular tissue, and repositions the nipple to a higher, more natural location. If there is significant volume loss, silicone implants can be used to increase fullness.
Recovery involves mild swelling and bruising, with gradual return to activities in 7–10 days. A special support bra must be worn for about 4 weeks.
Indications – When to choose mastopexy
Breast lift is recommended when there is:
- Nipple position below the inframammary fold
- Loss of firmness or sagging
- Asymmetry or shape irregularities
- Discomfort due to breast weight or movement
It is important that the pregnancy and breastfeeding cycle is completed before undergoing the procedure, to ensure stable and long-lasting results.

Advantages of mastopexy
Mastopexy offers:
- Improved appearance and symmetry of the breasts
- Lift and repositioning of the nipple to a natural location
- Enhanced self-confidence and femininity
- Relief from skin irritation or musculoskeletal discomfort
Contraindications and complications
ΗMastopexy is not recommended for:
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women
- Individuals with poor general health or uncontrolled chronic conditions
- Smokers who are unable to quit before and after the surgery

Psychological significance of the procedure

A personal consultation with the surgeon, realistic expectations, and accurate evaluation of needs are key elements to success.
