HYPERHIDROSIS

What is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a pathological condition characterized by excessive sweating beyond the body’s normal thermoregulatory needs. This condition can significantly affect a person’s quality of life, causing embarrassment, social isolation, and professional difficulties. It is classified into primary (idiopathic) hyperhidrosis, which results from overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system without an apparent organic cause, and secondary hyperhidrosis, which is related to underlying medical conditions such as endocrine disorders, medication intake, or obesity.

Hyperhidrosis primarily affects areas such as the armpits, palms, soles, and forehead. It can manifest as mild or intense episodes, regardless of environmental temperature or physical activity, and may be continuous or intermittent.

Treatment of Hyperhidrosis with Botox Injections

The most common and effective treatment for primary hyperhidrosis today is the use of injectable botulinum toxin type A (Botox). Botox works by blocking the action of nerve endings that stimulate the sweat glands, drastically reducing sweat production in the treated area.

The procedure is performed in a clinic setting and is quick and painless. The doctor identifies the problematic area (often with the help of special tests such as the iodine-starch test) and then injects small amounts of Botox with a very fine needle into specific points about 1 cm apart. The treatment is completed within 20–30 minutes and requires no downtime.

Initial results are noticeable within 2–4 days, with the maximum effect appearing after about 10 days. The effect of Botox in treating hyperhidrosis typically lasts between 6 and 9 months, significantly improving the patient’s daily life.
