What are stretch marks?

Stretch marks (striae distensae) are linear lesions of the skin that occur due to the rupture of collagen and elastin fibers in the deeper layers of the dermis, mainly caused by sudden stretching. They commonly appear in areas such as the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, breasts, and arms.

Common Causes Include:

• Hormonal changes (puberty, pregnancy)
• Rapid weight gain or muscle growth
• Genetic predisposition
• Long-term use of corticosteroids

Although they are not linked to health issues, stretch marks affect the skin’s appearance and can often cause psychological discomfort, particularly in younger individuals.

What do they look like – Symptoms:

Stretch marks are categorized based on their development stage:

• Active Stretch Marks (Striae rubrae)
  Bright red, pink, or purple lines. The skin is thin and slightly raised.
• Mature Stretch Marks (Striae albae)
  White or silver lines, deeper and less noticeable to the touch. These are harder to treat.

While they don’t cause pain, itching, or other physical discomfort, stretch marks are often associated with low self-esteem and a reluctance to expose the body.

How is the diagnosis made?

Diagnosis is clinical, based on the appearance and location of the marks. No laboratory tests are required.

The doctor assesses:

• The stage (red or white)
• The length, width, and density of the marks
• The skin’s phototype
• The presence of other lesions (e.g., scars, sagging skin)

This allows the creation of a personalized treatment protocol based on the skin’s type and resilience.
