What is Otoplasty?
Otoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure that corrects the protrusion or deformity of the ear pinnae. Its goal is to restore the ears to a harmonious anatomical position, closer to the head, or to correct congenital or acquired deformities. It is most commonly performed to correct “prominent ears” (due to underdevelopment of the antihelix or overdevelopment of the concha), a condition that can cause significant psychological distress.
Otoplasty is suitable for both children (from 5–6 years old, when the ear has completed its development) and adults. Timely correction of the deformity helps prevent social discomfort and the psychological effects related to appearance.

Procedure
ΗThe procedure is performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s age and the extent of the correction. The technique involves a small incision behind the ear, through which the surgeon reshapes the cartilage to reduce protrusion and create natural contours (antihelix, helix).
Depending on the anatomy:
- The cartilage is reshaped or folded with sutures,
- A portion of the cartilage may be removed,
- The conchal bowl may be tightened.
The operation takes about 1–1.5 hours per ear and is painless. The patient wears a bandage or special headband for 5–7 days and can return to daily activities within a few days.
Who is it for?
Otoplasty is indicated for:
- Children over 5 years old with prominent ears or deformities,
- Adults who did not undergo correction earlier and wish to change their appearance,
- Individuals with asymmetry or deformities due to trauma,
- Cases of recurrence or failed previous otoplasty.
The surgery does not affect hearing or ear function.
Advantages of Otoplasty
- Immediate aesthetic improvement and symmetry
- Boost in self-esteem, especially in children and adolescents
- Small and well-hidden incisions behind the ear
- Permanent and natural-looking results
- Fast recovery and minimal discomfort

Επιπλοκές – Αντενδείξεις
Possible complications include:
- Mild swelling or hematoma
- Temporary numbness or sensitivity in the area
- Asymmetry
- Hypertrophic scar (rare)
Contraindications:
- Active skin infections
- Bleeding disorders
- Unrealistic expectations regarding the surgery
Proper evaluation, a personalized approach, and the surgeon’s experience are crucial for the success and longevity of the results.
Psychological Importance of the Procedure
Especially in children and adolescents, prominent ears can lead to social isolation, bullying, or embarrassment. Correcting this issue in a simple and safe way provides substantial psychological support and improves quality of life. Adults, on the other hand, gain a renewed self-image that boosts their social and professional confidence.

Before & After

Postoperative Course
Immediately after otoplasty, a compressive bandage is placed around the ears and head, which remains for 3 days. The first dressing change is done on the 3rd day, after which the patient can wash their hair using an antiseptic product.
External stitches are removed on the 15th day, and it is recommended to use a soft elastic headband during sleep for about a month to prevent injury.
There are no visible scars, and patients can return to work even the next day. The results are permanent.
